Lapis Lazuli History
Lapis Lazuli has a rich and storied history that dates back to approximately 6000 BCE, when it was first used in Afghanistan to create beads and ornaments. In ancient cultures, particularly in Mesopotamia and Egypt, this vibrant blue stone was highly valued for its beauty and symbolism. It was often used in jewelry, amulets, and ceremonial artifacts, signifying royalty and divine favor.
In Ancient Egypt, Lapis Lazuli was cherished and used to adorn burial chambers of pharaohs and nobles. Artifacts such as scarabs and decorative items featured the stone, believed to have protective properties. Lapis Lazuli was also ground into a powder to create the rich ultramarine pigment used by Renaissance painters, making it one of the most sought-after materials for art.
Lapis Lazuli In Language
The name “Lapis Lazuli” translates to “Blue Stone.” The term “Lazuli,” meaning blue, derives from the Latin “Lazulum,” which has roots in the Persian word for blue. The word “Azul,” found in Spanish and Portuguese, shares this origin.
